Abstract: | In Sister Carrie, Theodore Dreiser depicts a consumer society, where consumption is viewed as an integral part of the social life. Living in such a consumption-dominated context, both Dreiser and his characters in Sister Carrie are unable to avoid its great impact. Consumer culture brands great marks on them, leading them to individualism, pragmatism and hedonism. Under such a context, people are united by their purchases into the web of consumer culture. |
