Abstract:Insanity is a theme in German romanticism literature. The madness in the literature is just one more means authors use for portraying, commenting on,or celebrating life in the real world. The reason for this is the nature mysticism that underlies German literature of this period and German romantic stories with plots are almost tales of love and desire, and also madness which often results from encountering with mysterious supernatural forces. Symptoms of insanity occur in the characters as a response to nature's claim on thematic subject to desire. The thesis illustrates the view mainly through Tieck and Hoffmann that the reaction to desire's call is a flight into fantasy, because these portrayals reflect a view of mankind as spiritually and mentally constituted to yearn for union with the divine through spiritual transcendence,as opposed to physical desire.
Keywords:German romanticism  madness  supernatural force  desire
