The Professional Female Dancer's Songs and the Ci Poetry in the Southern Tang Dynasty

The Southern Tang Dynasty, which lasted for 40 years only, was an important period serving as a link between past and future in the history of development of the ci-style literature. The muscians, choreographers in training lanes and private female dancers, singers in rich and powerful families, had jointly created the environment for ci poetry and its accompanying music to be flourishing in; increase in tune changes and creations in ci (poetry written in fixed numbers of lines and words) and qu (a type of verse for singing) had further expanded space for composing music,songs and ci poetry. In addition, the writing enviroment, consisting, for the most part, of happy get-togethers attended by the sovereign or prince and the subjects, all an official's dinner party to entertain his friends and collegues, also spurred the ci poets on to be getting farther and farther away from the style of ordinary dancers, singers or musicians; the ci poems presented on these occasions were usually written by men of learning expressing their feelings, which thereupan helped to develop the tendency of the style of ci poetry to be more and more refined and elegant.
