丁韪良在华英语教学活动及其对英语教学法的探索

丁韪良在华60余年,他对近代中国的教育尤其是英语教育具有积极的开拓和促进作用。一方面,丁韪良作为京师同文馆总教习,对英语学制、课程设置和考评方式等做出了开创式探索;另一方面,丁韪良在教学方法上进行革新。他不满足于移植引进当时国外流行的语法翻译法,还合理吸纳中国传统读书法中的精华,结合同文馆外语教学的实用目的,讲求用直观与情境等手段进行“学用结合”式的教学。

W.A.P.Martin's English Teaching Activities in China and His Exploration of English Teaching Methods

W.A.P.Martin has been in China for more than 60 years,and he pioneered and promoted the education in modern China,especially English education.On the one hand,W.A.P.Martin,as the head teacher of the Capital Tongwen Hall,made pioneering explorations on the English academic system,curriculum setting and evaluation methods;on the other hand,he innovated a lot in the teaching method.He was not satisfied with the introduction of the grammar translation method(GTM)popular at the time,but also absorbed the essence of the traditional Chinese reading method.Combining the practical purpose of foreign language teaching in the hall,he emphasizes the use of teaching and learning based on“teaching integrated with learning”.
