On metaphorical competence in L2 and its learnability and teachability: Review,analysis, and implications

As a focus of applied cognitive linguistics, Metaphorical competence (MC) in L2 is one of the key competences for L2 learners’ accuracy and idiomaticity in the use of target language. This paper first provides a thorough review of the existing literature (theoretical and empirical studies) on MC, and then it analyzes the convergence and divergence on various definitions of MC, differences between MC in L1 and L2, and the learnability and teachability of MC in L2 respectively. Finally, it discusses the implications of these studies on future theoretical and practical studies on MC in L2.
