Gregor Mendel: founding-father of modern genetics?

6 January 1984 marked the centenary of the death of that most notable Moravian scientist, Gregor Mendel. This article reviews the work of one of the most interesting men in the history of science, and attempts to gauge the nature of his thinking and his real role in the history of genetics and evolutionary science.
