A Comparative Study of Animal Images in Chinese and English Idioms

Both the Chinese and the English languages are full of idioms with animal images in them. Usually they are symbolic of certain things. While we compare them in the two languages, we can divide them into four groups: being completely correspondent, partially correspondent, completely different and impossible to correspond.The similarity of the animal images refiects the similar feelings in the two culture, while the differences show the different historical conventions, national psychology, and different idiomatic allusions. This study proves the inseparable relation between the language and the culture.
