Hearing deficit and its effect on speech perception∗
Authors:P  Dudley
Institution:National Acoustic Laboratories , Sydney
Abstract:A moderately deaf child may have enough hearing to convince his intelligent, concerned and observant parents that he is not deaf, but may yet have a severe speech and language defect. An explanation of the causal relationship between the deafness and the language defect is offered, in terms of the child's failure to acquire the language‐specific rules for categorisation of the sounds of speech.
