Gender,Nation and War:the Modernization and Visualization of Mulan Legend

Based on the framework of gender,family,nation and warfare,this essay analyses how the legend of Mulan has been modernized and visualized,and how the characteristics have been influenced by the society,the time,the genre and style.Mulan has become a model in late-Qing Dynasty and is considered as a national heroine,but her images in movies of that time tend to be both traditional and modern.The FTM cross-dressing of Mulan represents the temporary crossing of her identity,so her image in screen is very feminine.The genre and style of Mulan texts are various and show the spectrum from being funny and comedy to tragedy and epic.
