在新疆，居住民俗体现了浓厚的性别意识，各民族房屋居住方位意识明确。家庭中的主权者享有居室优先分配的权利，居室中的活动对女性有较多的限制和要求。由于城乡差异，女性受教育程度，以及家庭中男女双方家庭背景的差异等方面的原因，这种性别意识表现也有所不同。随着城乡一体化脚步的加快，女性受教育程度逐步的提高，性别差异也渐趋淡化。
