On Alerters of Chinese Causative Speech Acts

The author classifies alerters into two types, i. e. Address and Attention Getter, and contends that Alerters have some pragmatic function such as influencing the social relationships between the addressor and the addressee and their emotional distance, changing the degree of respect, and reinforcing the degree of request. The use of alerters is affected by its content, context and relationships between the addressor and the addressee. The degree of its formality is in direct proportion to the formality of requirement, the formality and urgency of context, and the social distance between the addressor and the addressee.
