Abstract:The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility X(3) of semiconductor quantum wires is calculated by considering excitonic effects to be the major electronic excitation. We find that confinement-induced localization of excitons greatly enhances X(3) and the enhancement is consistent with the recently observed results.
