Exploration of the First Leading Character in The Romance of Western Bower

Who is actually the leading character of The Romance of Western Bower by Wang Shifu? There have always existed different opinions about it. This is especially true of some of its adapted versions, where there are random alterations of the original arrangement of the characters for the convenience of performance. Proceeding from an analysis of Wang Shifu's original intention and purpose as well as comments and assessments made by subsequent theatrical theorists, the writer of this paper argues that the first leading character of The Romance of Western Bower by Wang Shifu ought to be Cui Yingying, the second main character should be Hong Niang (the match-maker) , and the third mam character is none other than Zhang Sheng.
