Huang Zunxian and the Evolving Images of the West in the Eyes of Chinese during the Late Qing Dynasty

Before the Opium War,Westerners were stereotyped as being uncivilized,barbarous,underdeveloped and despicable,which seemed eternally true in the eyes of the Chinese people.It is after the Opium War that the Chinese elitists gradually began to rethink the images of the West given the harsh realities,which,of course,was a complex process for them.Huang Zunxian was a typical figure who epitomized the changes of the way the Chinese people viewed their Western peers.This paper investigates into the evolving images of the West in the eyes of the Chinese people in the late Qing Dynasty,and elaborates in great length on the background and reasons behind such evolvement.
