The permeable university: Academic life in an age of special interests

Universities, like other institution, are both governed and managed. The processes of govermance within American universities have changed dramatically in recent years. To a significant degree, both the causes and the nature of the changes track changes in the larger surrounding political environment. In the final analysis, the future success of universities rests on the ability of university presidents to play the kind of leadership role that the national policy requires of the President of the United States.
