Abstract:The project Gutenberg which was led by Michael Hart inputs the classic and historical literature in the databases of Xerox Sigma V Mainframe and disseminates literature information via computers and networks. This method is convenient for people to use, opening up a new era of electronic publishing. The collection includes light literature, heavy literature and references. The project Gutenberg abides by the following ideas and principles: taking books of common economic rights as basic point and concentrating efforts on the preservation of the works; taking simple usage as purpose and concentrating efforts on the propagation and utilization of the works; taking social benefits as centre and concentrating efforts on removing the knowledge divide; taking opening content as visual angle and concentrating efforts on sharing human civilization achievements. The development of network e-book projects in the future should consider the following factors to achieve long-term and sustainable development: source books, technology, and au- thenticity of digital content of works, economic interests and limitation of users' utilization of e-books.
Keywords:Project Gutenberg  E-text  E-book
