Abstract:Interaction analyses of teaching and learning situations in adult education have discovered different aspects of power since they started in the 1970s. These results depended both on the assumed underlying power concepts—attributive or relational—and on the type of media used to record them—journal records, transcriptions, images or video. In a historical reconstruction three phases can be distinguished which are determined by the recognition of obstacles to participation (1), of reciprocal power of negotiation and interpretation (2) of the (appropriation of) power of space and of gaze assymmetries (3).
