A Discussion of the Significance of Ballad Studies during the May 4th Movement

The emergence of Ballad Studies during the May 4th Movement has an important significance in the 20th century ’ s history of ideas and academics. As an important component of the New Culture and New Literary Revolution, Ballad Studies bears the stamp of the ideological enlightenment. Hu Shi, Zhou Zuoren and Gu Jiegang acted as leaders in the different stages of this movement. Their concerns for and participation in the folk literature and folk culture constitute the important part of their academic activities and personal political feelings. And their researches in this field show their different academic attitudes and focuses of concerns, reflecting their thinking and exploration into the issues of the generation of the main force of modernity and the problem of intellectual self-identity.
