Abstract:The only Republican candidates present in North Carolina for the September, 1987 debate were Congressman Jack Kemp and former Governor Pierre du Pont. We invited Vice President George Bush, Senator Robert Dole, General Alexander Haig, and Reverend Pat Robertson to respond to the questions asked by former Governor Martin and the two reporters (Judy Woodruff and Ted Fiske), and the first two submitted written responses which have been interspersed throughout the transcript where appropriate. We have edited the transcripts minimally. The most common form of editing was tightening the questions through omission of extraneous phrases. We also eliminated some of the “We're glad to be in this great state of North Carolina” type of commentary as well as a question (and the corresponding answers) that dealt with the fact that only two Republican candidates showed up for the debate. Finally, introductory phrases such as “In my opinion” and “I believe” were added to the beginning of some of the answers provided by Bush and Dole in order to reduce the extent of reader distraction from the substance of the comments due to abrupt transitions from spontaneous speech to crafted text.
