Abstract:An influential writer in the 19th century in America, Ambrose Bierce is noted for his devotion to the ghost story. The supernatural in his stories, like Poe, mirrors human psychology. Generally there are three groups of the supernatural in his short story: the Supernatural Gothic, the psychic story, and the story of ironic terror. This article, through text reading, tries to prove that these three groups, from different angles, reflect Bierce's belief that when confronting with the ultimate existential plights, a person reveals the nature of his character through his psychological words.
