Novel Translation Activities in the Late Qing Dynasty and Their Consequences: A Polysystemic Perspective

According to the polysystem theory proposed by Itamar Even-Zohar, translation acquired a primary position in the Chinese literary system in the late Qing Dynasty. New ideologies, subject matters and writing techniques were introduced through translation, and, in particular, novel translations. Translation of novels elevated the status of novels in the Chinese literary system, promoted prosperity of novel writing in the Chinese language and caused changes to novel writing methods and forms.
