| 摘 要： | 格林小说的魅力来自其丰富的阐释可能，《沉静的美国人》便是其中一例。这部作品往往被看作是格林由宗教转向政治的代表作，然而，通过分析主人公福勒由逃避到介入继而陷入道德困境的心路历程，揭示出小说家格林对萨特存在主义哲学中有关伦理方面的思考，以及对选择、行动、责任和道德标准的相对性等存在主义概念的诠释。

| Abstract: | This paper attempts to analyze Graham Greene's The Quiet American from the perspective of existentialism. With a psychological study of the main character in the novel, Thomas Fowler, and Fowler's spiritual process-from detachment, commitment to moral dilemma, Greene revealed his ethical concern and interpretation of the concepts of existentialism: choice, action, responsibility and relativity of moral standards. |
