Unforgettable Coldness and Hardness ---Analyzing the story The Whistle by Eudora Welty

Narratology is a theory of narrative, which is applied in examining all narratives, and only narratives. It aims to describe the narrative-specific system of rules presiding over narrative production and processing. The story The whistle by Eudora Welty is extracted from her story collection A Curtain of Green. The whistle is laid in such a background as a warning of early frost --- The southern poor farmers bring out everything with what they have, even including their clothes, to protect the crops （tomatoes） against the freeze. In this short story, the author mainly shows the hard and mean life of the poor couple to the readers. Welty takes different point of views to tell the story and uses the various ways to present the character＇s thought and speech, which not only strengthens the reliability of the story, but clearly illustrates the theme of the story the farmers＂ poverty and hardship life. So in this paper, we try to give a specific explanation and analysis on this short story from the following aspects： point of view of the narrator, speech and thought presentation and rhetorical devices.
