Chinese Repository,founded in Guangzhou in May 1832,was an English monthly magazine founded by American missionaries.Its content included geography,ethics,politics,commerce,literature and religion,so that westerners in China could know the real China.This magazine became an important source for westerners to imagine China.Many articles in it mentioned emperors of China,and the topics mostly involved Sino-foreign trade,Sino-foreign wars,and handling of daily affairs.Through these directly commented and translated articles,the magazine reported on the emperors of the late Qing Dynasty from different aspects,which also gave us a glimpse of the emperors’image in westerners’eyes in the late Qing Dynasty.
