| Abstract: | In 1976 a small-scale experiment concerning the middle school was begun in the Netherlands. The aim of the middle school is comprehensive education for pupils aged 12 to 15. In this article the development of this experiment and a review of research results is presented. The results are not very clear, partly because of imperfections in the evaluation design chosen. The middle school experiment as such has now been stopped, but a new innovation, comprising the introduction of a basic (common core) curriculum is planned. These plans and the evaluation design proposed to assess its effects are briefly summarized at the end of this article. |
