Abstract:The UK publishing industry is one of the most developed in the world; it is very competitive and productive and the leading world exporter of books. However, UK publishers have been reluctant to recognise the importance of pre-entry publishing education and post-entry continuing professional development. However, the technical and commercial changes in the industry and its globalisation is changing that. Publishers are coming to realise that their staff need a range of new operational skills and their more senior executives need new managerial skills and the ability to anticipate and respond to rapid change. The UK universities which teach publishing have an important role to play in this process. They already contribute through relevant modern undergraduate and postgraduate courses in publishing. They are active in providing continuing professional development, although they should probably focus more on developing strategic capabilities than delivering skills training. They could also play a more active role in helping to develop publishing skills standards which would gain national and international recognition. They have a role in publishing research which needs further development. The universities additionally have an important part to play in international knowledge transfer and developing mutual understanding between diverse publishing communities worldwide. Finally they have a role in leading the debate on issues around the ethical, cultural and aesthetic aspects of publishing which may be neglected in an increasingly competitiive and profit-driven industry.
Keywords:pre-entry education  professional development  competitive environment  skills standards  globalisation  non-commercial issues
