The Paradoxical Nature of Metaphor in Mrs.Dalloway

The abundant metaphors in Mrs.Dalloway have long been argued by the critic to have variety of connotations and thus pose paradoxical nature.As a precursor of modern writer,Virginia Woolf has exploited the technique of paradox in her writing.As the novel is teeming with hidden——or critically unrecognized——lyrical metaphors that frustrate the reading of the novel,this paper is dedicated to the study of the paradoxical nature of the metaphors in Mrs.Dallowy to explore Woolf＇s understanding of modern life.Three metaphors,the window image,the sound of the bell and the movement of rising and falling,are explored to prove the paradoxical nature of modern writing of Woolf and the contradictory nature of modern life that is exposed in the novel.
