Abstract:This chapter examines the challenges before the U.S. National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) as it responds to rising expectations for better education indicator data. The first section summarizes the issues raised by the Congressionally-mandated report, Education Counts: An Indicator System to Monitor the Nation's Educational Health (U.S. Department of Education, 1991), and the report's implications for NCES. The second section takes up the challenges that NCES must face before an indicator system can meet policy makers' demands.
