Stereotypes in cyberspace: writing an anti-racist website
Authors:Chris Gaine
Institution:University of Leeds School of Education
Abstract:This article deals with some of the difficulties and dilemmas of writing and producing an educational website about ‘race’ and racism (www.britkid.org). With a ‘cast’ of fictionalized characters exploring a wide range of issues relating to racism in the UK, the site is arguably closer to being a mass media product than conventional school materials, and the white, male author had to negotiate complex dilemmas about stereotyping and representation in both the initial drafts and in responding to prepublication feedback. These are explored, together with some reflections upon the relationship between research and a ‘product’ such as this.
