Towards the clinical use of interferon

Interferon has two well defined effects. It inhibits the replication of viruses and it suppresses cell division. Despite the potential importance of both these properties in medicine, surprisingly little clinical use has yet been made of interferon, one reason being the great difficulty in obtaining sufficient human interferon for experimental use. This article reviews the fundamental properties of interferon and its use in some current clinical investigations.
