An Interpretation of Yao Mulan and Scarlett O'Hara

Yao Mulan and Scarlett O＇ Hara are the heroines from the Moment in Peking by Lin Yutang and Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell respectively. They lived in different countries and in different periods of time. They share similarities in family and social background, pursuit of love, sense of female awareness. But they differ a lot in characters： the former is characterized with beauty of static, self-devoted and sophisticated, while the latter enjoys beauty of dynamic, self-centered and unscrupulous. Through comparative study on similarities and differences of the two heroines, this thesis tries to prove that they were typical representative in eastern and western culture.
