On the Characteristics and Application of Phonological Rules

This paper is primarily concerned with phonological rules, one of the major study areas of generative phonology. Instead of categorizing different rules, the paper lays its focus on phonological rules'c haracteristics of context - sensitiveness, and formulation and generalization of various phonological processes or changes. Besides, the paper also discusses what phonological rules do when actually applied. They are found to be able to incorporate distinctive feature analysis and phonotactics for some phonological purposes and t specify some phonological phenomena.
