Tragedy of Isabel's Freedom--Comment on Henry James's The Portrait of a Lady

Henry James is one of the three pioneers of American Realism in the 19th century.His The Portrait of a Lady is considered to be an excellent literary work,which can be analyzed in the diverse ways.This novel,not only stresses the outstanding "International theme" on which his fame rests but also represents James's vivid anatomization of Isabel's consciousness that foreshadows his future of being regarded as a psychological realist.In fact,from the view of existentialism,especially the notions of freedom from Sartre's Existentialism,this paper tries to illustrate that Isabel's tragic marriage can be seen to be the tragedy of her freedom.
