文化冲突下的成长之路——《三四郎》主题评析

The Growing-up Way under the Cultural Conflict---On the Theme in Sanshirou

Souseki Natsume is a famous writer of Meiji Era, whose Sanshirou is about a young man coming to Tokyo’s university from his hometown and his mental experience from longing to bewilderment. Below the surface structure of the love story, the novella reflects a young intellectual’s ambivalence and confusion under the conflict between Eastern and Western civilizations. The growing-up way of Sanshirou conforms to the” Separation-Test-Socialization-Regeneration” prototypical narrative structure of Bildungsro-man. Combined with the specific social and cultural context, through analyzing the process of the protago-nist’s subjectivity construction and its incompleteness, this paper points out the cultural conflict, which ex-erts the dual pressures on the protagonist, makes him become a typical contradictory character.
