| 摘 要： | 过去时的基本意义表示过去时间,但也表示非真实性与和缓的语气,因而形成一个多义范畴。文章主要探讨了英语动词过去时的实质———距离性及其背后的认知理据,从而揭示三种意义间的内在关系。

| Abstract: | The Past tense is regarded as a polysemous category which has three different related meanings.The Past tense indicates past time,the unreality of an event or a state and functions as a kind of pragmatic softener.This paper discusses the remoteness of past time,cognitive motivation and relationship between past time use and non-past time use. |
