A Review of Chinese Prose Studies in 2003

Great achievements have been secured in Chinese prose studies in 2003, as is manifest in the impetuous momentum of social background and climate, the gradual emergence of the growing awareness of problems on the part of prose scholars, the reinforcement of rational criticism and the increasing attention of creative thought. However, there have also been obvious defects, as is evident in the conservatism of notions, the abstruseness and emptiness of argumentation and the crudeness of attitude, etc. Hence the need for transcendence in the new year.
