The article is written as a basis for a discussion on the function and purpose of educational evaluation. The main standpoint is that different approaches for educational evaluation are presented as scientific improvements, but mirror mainly the objective functions of education in the society and the need within the state apparatus for a scientific legitimation of various political decisions. From that notion, arguments are developed for a wider interpretation of educational evaluation‐based theories on the relation between education, the state apparatus, and the society oriented critical research.
