Abstract: | The Nobel Prize has been a prominent research topic in Scientometrics. This study aims to explore Nobel citation effects, which refer to changes in the cumulative citation counts of publications after authors have won the Nobel Prize. In this study, we propose an exchangeability verification method to ensure samples in experimental group (EG) and control group (CG) are indistinguishable based on relatively few covariates. Then, we quantify Nobel citation effects by employing the propensity score matching strategy. Finally, we combine the matching strategy with statistical tests to ensure the reliability of the conclusions. We find that publications in 18 topics have significant and positive Nobel citation effects among the 50 topics in Physics, that is, when authors of publications belonging to one of the 18 topics won the Nobel Prize, the post-award citation counts of their publications would increase. Besides, we find that the Nobel citation effects are long term, lasting for 47 years or more. Finally, we find Nobel citation effects are significant and positive for publications whose authors won the Nobel Prize before the 1980s. |
