On Zhang Ai-ling'''' s Female Consciousness and Her Female Writing Themes

Influenced by various factors such as her childhood experiences and educational background, etc, Zhang Ai-ling truned out to be a writer of strong female consciousness in the hsitory of modern Chinese literature. By probing into the female life of that particular era with her unique female perspective and gender sensitivity, she discussed women's humble living status beyond their control and portrayed their group features of sub-culture like estrangement, silence, illiteracy, dependency, etc. Zhang opined that the group tragedy of females is attributable, on one hand, to the control, oppression and direction of the deep-rooted male dominion tradition and on the other hand, to women's willingness to be enslaved. Zhang's profound and serious self-reflection has exerted a markedly significant impact on the history of modern Chinese women literature since the May-4th Movement.
