Using Speech Act Theory to Direct the Teaching of English Listening Course

Since applied linguistics defines the nature of language learning in connection with various linguistic theories, it helps the teacher to choose teaching methods and techniques. By using speech act theory, this paper discusses how to improve the students' ability of listening comprehen sion . According to this theory, when one is saying something, three kinds of acts are performed simultaneously. They are locutionary act, illocutionary act and perlocutionary act. What speech act theory is most concerned with is the illocutionary acts. It Attempts to account for the ways by which speakers can mean more than what they say. Context can help to do this.
