| Abstract: | This paper investigates the interpretive force of relevance theory to the defeasibility of presupposition. The paper points out that the process of interpreting an utterance is a process of changing and establishing the context of both the speaker and listener. Context is a variable. Just because the context is subject to change, presupposition can be defeasible. The paper emphasizes that in communication there is not such a notion as semantic presupposition and that all we have is pragmatic presupposition. |
