义和团时期的徐桐

徐桐深受儒家经典熏陶,堪称良吏,但对已经发生巨变的国际局势并不了解,仍然坚持尊王攘夷,不懂得中西文化可以交流,共同进步,认为学习外国长处,就是离经叛道。认为因为外国侵略中国,所以就可以不分青红皂白,主张杀洋人,杀教民,将爱国主义变成了荒谬的盲目排外。

Xu Tong in the Period of Boxers

Xu Tong was deeply affected by Confucianism and could be called a good government official.However,he was not familiar with the greatly changed international situation.He still worshiped the emperor at his time and resist things overseas.He did not know Chinese and western culture could be interchanged and progress mutually.He thought learning the advantages of western countries was departing from the classics and rebelling against orthodoxy.He advocated the foreigners should be killed without any consideration because of the western aggression.Hence,his patriotism changed into absurd blind exclusion.
