Relevance theory and the teaching of English reading

Sperber and Wilson’s relevance theory is widely used in many kinds of fields.Relevance theory,proposed by Sperber and Wilson,has been widely applied to various fields and has a strong guiding role on the teaching of English reading.According to relevance theory,reading is a process of the ostensive intention for the writer and the inferential one for the reader.In the course of English reading,it is essential to clear the author’s real intentions,find the optimal relevance,obtain contextual effects through reasoning,so as to achieve the effective reading.This paper introduces the concept and principles of relevance theory,discusses the importance of relevance theory in English reading teaching.
