In English there exist several blocking phenomena,one of which is the morphological blocking which comprises the blockings of derivational and inflectional processes by the existing lexical items.According to the theory of level ordering,derivational and inflectional processes are organized into a series of levels,the ordering of which correlates with the ordering of morphological processes in word formation.The theory of the level ordering is exploited to reveal how the morphological blocking occurs.The paper holds that the theory of level ordering can account for the occurrence of the morphological blocking to a certain degree.One defect in the theory is dealt with and revised.
