A case study of the understanding and translation of indirect speech acts

The propositional meaning conveyed by the particular words and structures in utterances is called loeutionary meaning.The meaning that demonstrates the effect on the reader or listener is illocutionary meaning.A speech act is the utterance which has both locutionary and illocutionary meanings. The speech acts that indirectly perform certain kinds of speech acts such as requests,refusals and complaints out of consideration of politeness are just known as an indirect speech acts.The locutionary acts expressing a same illocutionary act may be varied in colorful splendor and featured with different characteristics.The present paper chooses an actress's lines with her extremely personal characteristics as a case study to introduce the term indirect speech act and all the related concepts and their horizontal and vertical relations,and thereupon,delves into all the principles of translation and their multi-dimensional relationship.The issue of how theory and practice are combined in linguistics classes is therefore illustrated to a certain degree.
