The Multicultural Root of New York City

The city that would become New York began when Henry Hudson, an English explorer hired by the Dutch, discovered Manhattan Island in 1609 while searching for a quicker route to the Orient. Fifteen years later, the area was claimed by the Dutch, who established a colony there named New Amsterdam.The colony welcomed people from different nations who were willing to work. By the 1640s, there were 18 different languages spoken in New York.
