据科学家说，到2005年1月份，温暖的气候已经使南极大陆西部融化的面积总和相当于加利福尼亚州的大小。据科学家在1999年7月到2005年7月收集的卫星数据显示，包括南极内陆和高纬度、高海拔地区在内的多个不同区域已有明显融化迹象，上述地区曾经被认为是不可能发生融化的。最高为华氏41度的温度在南极大陆持续了近一周时间，这足够融化一个大面积的冰层。

California Sized Area of Antarctica Melted

Warm temperatures melted an area of western Antarctica that addsup to the size of California in January 2005, scientists report. Satellite data collected by the scientists between July 1999 and July 2005 showed clear signs that melting had occurred in multiple distinct regions, including far inland and at high latitudes and elevations, where melting had been considered unlikely.
