一如在现实生活中一样,在文学中,女性自我意识也首先表现为对男权家庭进行反面叙述来表现对家庭的否定。爱米莉在《呼啸山庄》中打破了父权家庭的神话,把父亲及男性家长看作家庭混乱、职能丧失、最终解体的根源,为她对父权家庭的否定“找到”了合理的前提与被社会普遍接受的理由,表达了她对充满父爱的非专制压抑的家庭生活的向往。
