This paper discusses one of the most important themes in William Faulkner's well-known novel Light in August - the splitting and ambiguity of personality in modern society. Faulkner employed in the novel many techniques such as splitting, paradox, polarity, or the "one is two" formula to reveal the characters' dual personalities, to exhibit their double figures, to display modern man's inner conflicts and ambiguity, to expose a world of confusion and insubstantiality in that era, in the hope of retrieving a definite and eternal world which had already been lost.
