Exploring the link between culture and strategy in media organisations: The cases of the BBC and CNN

Abstract

This study employs participant observation methodology to examine the U.S. broadcast industry's cognitions of its external environment. Previous research has documented a tendency among industry participants to operate under outdated mental models of their environment. This tendency ‐ labeled ‘cognitive inertia’ ‐ provides the analytical framework for this study. The results provide indications that broadcasters operate under what appear to be outdated mental models of their external environment, with broadcasters appearing to pay inadequate attention to competing program sources and failing to account for the changing demographic composition of the television audience. However, these conclusions are tempered by the broadcast industry's dual‐product marketplace characteristics, wherein cognitions that would appear to reflect inadequate assessment of the content market may in fact reasonably reflect the contemporary realities of the audience market.

中国体育科学发展现状与展望

采用文献资料调研和调查访问等方法 ,对中国体育科学研究的特点与存在的问题进行了探讨 ,并对中国体育科学发展进行了展望。研究表明 :中国体育科学表现出科学研究取得高水平成果、研究手段多样化、初步形成了中国特色的体育科学研究体系、开始步入国际体育科学舞台等 4个方面的特点。但是 ,中国体育科学研究存在着创新性研究成果 (假说 )不多、研究方法中存在的缺陷、体育科学研究发展不平衡、在国际体育科学研究领域地位不高等问题。另外 ,中国体育科学应当在理论研究突出重点 ;应用研究突出实用特征、新技术与新方法的应用 ;加强中国特色的体育科学研究 ;建立中国体育科学数据平台 ;不断提高在国际体育科学研究中地位等方面进行加强。     

The process of supervision in the turkish educational system: purpose, structure, operation

The aim of this study is to provide information on the purposes, structure and operation of the process of supervision in the Turkish educational system. In this paper, the historical development of supervision services in the Turkish educational system, as well as the purposes and principles of educational supervision in Turkey and the structure of supervision in the Turkish educational system are defined. Moreover, the organization of sub-systems of the Ministry of National Education and that of supervision at elementary schools, hiring supervisors, their training, duties and responsibilities as well as working principles are presented. In addition, a detailed analysis of the supervision of institutions and teachers by supervisors is included.     

Climate Change and Morality: Students' perspectives on the individual and society

There is a growing interest in addressing moral aspects in the research and education of socio‐scientific issues. This paper investigates students' interpretations of climate change from a moral perspective. The students were 14 years old, studying at Green Schools in the Beijing area, China. The study was based on semi‐structured group interviews and the data were analysed from an intentional perspective, which means that both cognitive and situational aspects were taken into consideration in the analysis. Previous research has revealed a close relation between morality and socio‐scientific issues and also advocated the need for addressing ethical aspects in science education. However, empirical studies exploring the question of what students' moral reasoning might look like at the individual level have not yet generated enough attention. In this study this is the core focus of interest. The findings show that the students conceptualise the solutions to mitigating climate change in relation to two different stances. That is, they contextualise the problems and solutions by addressing the individual, where the individual is either ‘myself’ or ‘someone else’. The different notions of the individual become crucial as the students' views and considerations for the environment, as well as society, change according to the different contexts. From a moral point of view, the students seem quite unaware of their varying consideration for others, the environment and society. The paper ends with a discussion of implications for practice and research.

Audio-Visual Material in the Gävle Region

Experiential archaeology: Is virtual time travel possible?

Advances in computing hardware coupled with its software counterparts have, for the past decades, influenced to a greater extent both the workflow of archaeologists and their interpretation of archaeological data. On the leisurely periphery, the synergy that arises between entertainment demands and commercial driven developments of interactive 3D (i3D) computer games has pushed these technologies beyond the expectations of the Virtual Reality (VR) community. This phenomenal growth in useable technology and its proportionate decrease in price have benefited the applicability of VR which in turn, have made it more accessible for researchers wishing to harness its benefits. The last 10 years have seen a steady increase in the use of VR technology to restore, preserve, reconstruct, recreate, and visualise ancient sites, monuments and artefacts. But, is technology ready for virtual time travel (VTT)? This article examines the possibility of experiential archaeology in voltage and silicon with the aim of formulating a strategy for VTT.
